Hand arthritis · 5-minute read

“Sometimes I look at my hands, and they don’t even look like mine anymore.”

Stiff every morning. Jars, buttons, car doors. If arthritis is taking the little things away from you, read this to the end.

Bumpy, crooked finger joints: what hand arthritis can look like.

Her story

“I’m 56, and I’m scared of my own hands.”

This story brings together what so many people with hand arthritis tell us, in their own words.

I’m 56. I’ve had arthritis in my hands for about four years. But this last year, it got so much worse. And I’m really scared.

Every morning, I wake up with my fingers so stiff I can’t even make a fist. I sit on the edge of my bed for twenty, thirty minutes. Opening and closing my hands. Trying to loosen them up.

My husband brings me my coffee. Because I can’t hold the pot without sharp pain shooting through my knuckles.

I used to knit. I made a blanket for every one of my grandkids when they were born. Now I can’t hold the needles for five minutes without my hands cramping. I quit six months ago. I cried for days.

It sounds silly. But knitting was my therapy. It was how I relaxed. How I felt useful.

Now I just feel… broken.

Last week, at the grocery store, I couldn’t open my own car door. My hands couldn’t grip the handle. I stood there for ten minutes, trying every angle. Someone saw me struggling and opened it for me. I was so embarrassed, I cried the whole way home.

I can’t cook anymore either. I used to make big Sunday dinners for my family. Now I can’t chop vegetables without pain. I can’t open jars. I can’t lift a pot of water. My daughter started bringing food over. I know she means well. But I feel so useless.

The pain is constant. Even when I’m not using my hands, they hurt. They’re hot and swollen.

My mom had bad arthritis. At 70, she couldn’t button her own shirts. I don’t want that to be me.

Sound familiar?

You’re not the only one.

What she tried

“I tried everything.”

  • IbuprofenIt helped at first. Then it stopped working, and her stomach paid for it.
  • Cortisone shotsAbout three weeks of relief each time. Then the pain came back.
  • Pain creamsGreasy hands, a strong smell, and gone in an hour.
  • Compression glovesNice support. But no warmth, and no massage.
  • Wax bathsSoothing. But melting wax every morning? Messy, and it takes time.
  • SurgeryHer doctor brought it up. It scares her. She wants to try everything else first.

The simple part

What actually feels good on stiff, achy hands

Ask people with hand arthritis what feels good, and two answers come up again and again: warmth, and a gentle hand massage.

  • WarmthWarm hands feel less stiff. Heat relaxes tight muscles and brings more blood to the area. That’s why a sink of warm water feels so good in the morning.
  • A slow, soft squeezeA gentle squeeze and release, like someone massaging your hands, helps tired, tight fingers relax.
  • Easier to moveStiff joints like to move. After a few warm minutes, opening and closing your hands feels easier.

What it won’t do

It won’t change your X-ray. It won’t replace your doctor or your medicine. It’s a simple way to make your hands feel better, every morning and every night.

If your joints are red, hot and swollen during a flare, heat may not feel good. Some people prefer cold then. Ask your doctor what’s right for you.

Questions

Before you order

Will it help my arthritis?

It soothes arthritis hand pain and eases stiffness with warmth and a gentle squeezing massage. It is not a medical device, and it doesn’t replace your doctor or your medicine.

Is heat OK for me?

For most stiff, achy hands, warmth feels good. If your joints are red, hot and swollen during a flare, heat may not feel good, and some people prefer cold then. If you’re not sure, ask your doctor.

Will it fit my hand?

It fits most adult hands, left or right. The wrist cuff closes with a strap. Take off rings and watches first.

How warm does it get?

Warm and soothing, not hot. You can turn the heat on or off. If it ever feels too warm, take your hand out.

Is it cordless?

Yes. It recharges with the USB cable in the box. Charge it fully before the first use.

Who should ask a doctor first?

If you’re pregnant, have a pacemaker, an open wound or a recent hand injury, or if you can’t feel heat well in your hands, talk to your health care provider before you use it.

What are the free gloves?

A pair of fingerless compression gloves. They give your hands gentle compression and keep them warm during the day or at night, between massage sessions. They come free with 2 or 3 massagers, in the same box.

How much is shipping?

FREE to the US and Canada with 2 or 3 massagers. $4.99 with a single massager. Tracking included.
